Turn this guide into a decision

Read the guidance, then compare current options and run the numbers for your situation.

!The Bottom Line

The same $10,000 can make paid Premium+ trail Marcus while deposit-boosted X comes out ahead. Compare the route you qualify for, subtract the expense it adds, and keep enough immediately accessible cash for bills.

How to choose

What to weigh before you pick

It usually comes down to 3 things. Compare your options on each before deciding.

APY

The rate that actually sticks after any promo expires.

Fees & minimums

Monthly fees and the balance needed to earn the top rate.

Access

Transfer speed, withdrawal limits, and ATM reach.

On $10,000, an unchanged 6% APY earns $250 more over a year than 3.50%. Pay $395 to obtain that higher rate and the advantage becomes a $145 shortfall. Receive the same higher rate without buying the subscription and the $250 advantage remains.

That reversal is the reason to compare X Money in separate scenarios. A headline rate cannot tell you what your account will contribute to your finances.

$600

Interest; no Premium+ purchase modeled.

X standard

$400

Interest at the standard rate.

Marcus

$350

Constant rates, retained interest, one year, no tax or optional costs. Subscription paid outside savings. These figures are calculated examples, not forecasts.

The figure uses Marcus’s 3.50% APY, dated October 11, and Ally’s 3.10% savings APY, dated October 8. Marcus lists no fees or minimum deposit; Ally lists no minimum opening deposit. Optional services can still have charges.

X’s snapshot separates its standard, deposit-boosted and Premium+ paths. See the eligibility review before assuming a path is available to you.

Derived one-year illustrations. All rates remain unchanged, interest stays in the account, and the new annual subscription is paid outside the savings balance. Negative means the subscription exceeds interest; it does not mean the deposit loses principal. Taxes and optional charges are excluded.

At $25,000, paid Premium+ exceeds Marcus by $230 in this illustration. But it still trails deposit-boosted X by the entire $395 charge. If you can obtain the boost without that purchase, the relevant decision changes.

Formulas, assumptions and sources

Flat-rate interest = balance × [(1 + APY / 100)^(months / 12) − 1]. Net benefit = interest × (1 − tax / 100) − subscription. Taxes are applied at the end; no subscription deduction is assumed. Fees are paid outside the savings balance.

A new annual plan charges full years upfront, including renewals: $395 × ceiling(months / 12). A new monthly plan charges $40 × months. For an existing plan or upgrade, use the actual extra cost for the whole period; zero is appropriate only if this decision adds no expense.

Rates and qualification stay unchanged. No contributions, withdrawals, bonuses, card rewards, optional transfer fees or value of other subscription features. SoFi paid Plus uses daily reinvestment across the individual $20,000 cap with $10 monthly fees; actual crediting can differ. Joint accounts and downgrade timing are not modeled. Confirm your actual fees, eligibility and credited APY.

An annual subscription is an upfront expense. Holding the cash for three months does not make three-quarters of that bill disappear. The calculator charges the full annual purchase when applicable, and separately allows an actual incremental fee for an existing subscription or upgrade.

For a different verified alternative, use the editable APY in our Premium+ calculator. These two banks are not the entire market.

Access can consume the spread

Marcus describes same-day processing of qualifying transfers up to $100,000 initiated before noon Eastern on business days, subject to conditions and the receiving bank’s availability. Ally limits certain savings withdrawals and transfers to ten per statement cycle.

For X withdrawal methods and charges, use the review’s access section. A transfer-processing claim is not a guarantee that money will be spendable at the destination immediately.

An emergency reserve needs a usable route back to spending cash. Keeping an immediate bill buffer can be sensible even when a separate reserve account pays more.

Compare account structure without declaring a safety winner

Marcus deposits are held at Goldman Sachs Bank USA; Ally Savings is a bank deposit at Ally Bank. X provides a banking-partner and sweep arrangement. Review applicable insurance limits and existing deposits at those banks before moving a large balance.

This article does not rank institutional safety. The Fintech Safety Check and coverage guide explain the questions to ask.

When moving is worth the effort

For a small balance, compare the yearly dollar gain with your transfer costs and the time required to maintain qualification. For a larger balance, subscription drag shrinks as a percentage, but insurance overlap and account access deserve more attention.

Use the Premium+ break-even if buying or upgrading is the decision. Use the app-account comparison if your paycheck and account features matter together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher APY always produce more net cash?
No. Subscriptions, taxes and optional transaction charges can outweigh the rate advantage. Compare the same balance and holding period after the expenses each choice adds.
Are these the best savings accounts in the market?
This is a comparison of the named products, not an exhaustive ranking. Other accounts may pay more or fit better. Check the current savings table and provider disclosures.
Are referral boosts included?
No. Marcus referral boosts, sign-up bonuses, card rewards and personalized promotions are excluded. They need their own verified eligibility and duration.
