What the biggest banks pay on savings

The lowest of the 17 biggest banks we track pays 0.01% APY (Chase). The highest savings rate we track pays 4.40% APY (PiBank). On $10,000 for a year, that gap is up to $439 in interest.

This is the gap behind our Bank Gap work: the same money, earning very different amounts depending on where it sits. All rates here are Tracked: read from each bank's public page and dated, not yet checked by a person.

Common questions

Why do the biggest banks pay so little on a savings account?

Large banks hold a lot of deposits from customers who rarely move, so they do not need to pay more to attract them. Online banks and credit unions compete harder for new money and often pay several times as much.

How is the yearly cost worked out?

It is the highest savings rate we track (4.40% at PiBank) minus the bank's rate, applied to $10,000 for one year. It ignores compounding, balance tiers and account conditions, so treat it as a plain comparison, not a promise.

Is the top rate verified?

No. Every rate on this page is a tracked rate: we read it from the bank's public page and date it. Verified lists, where a person has checked the terms, are on the best-rates pages linked below.

Which banks are counted as the biggest?

Large national banks that we tag as top-tier institutions. Small, local and online banks are not in this list. Banks with no reading from the last 7 days are left out.
