SwitchWize Research Desk: Preliminary Data

How Long a Top Savings Rate Lasts

Between April 20, 2026 and October 3, 2026, a bank that reached the top 10 of 126 tracked high-yield savings accounts stayed there a median of 15 days, and only 32% lasted 30 days. Where the reason is known, 79% of top spots were lost because other banks passed the leader, not because it cut its rate.

Preliminary data: read this first

This covers 167 days (April 20, 2026 to October 3, 2026) and the 126 institutions SwitchWize tracks, not the whole market. It is one rate cycle, so treat the patterns as a first look, not a law. We refresh it as history grows.

How long a top-10 spot lasts

Each day we rank the institutions by their best high-yield savings APY. A stay is an unbroken run of days in the top 10. Of 63 stays, 43 have ended and 10 are still running. 10 were already in progress when tracking began, so their start is unknown and they are left out of the curve. The median stay was 15 days.

Rank churn, not rate decay

The usual advice is that top rates are teasers that fade. The data points to something different. 40 banks entered the top 10 and had a rate on the day they entered and 30 days later. The median change in their own rate over that month was zero, and only 10% were lower. Across 91 institutions with at least 60 days of data, 52% never changed their rate by 0.05 points or more in the window. Of the 73 confirmed changes, 44% were cuts.

We also checked why each completed stay ended. Of the 43 completed stays, 26 ended with the bank's own rate unchanged (other banks passed it), 7 ended when the bank cut its own rate, and 10 could not be classified because the bank had no fresh rate that day. What this means for a saver: a good rate at a bank that rarely changes it can still slide down the ranking without anything happening to your own rate.

Method

  • Daily panel: for each institution and day, the highest high-yield savings APY we observed. Values of 0 or 10 and above are discarded as scrape errors.
  • An institution's last observed rate is carried forward for up to 7 days. After that it drops out of that day's ranking.
  • Top 10: the 10 highest current values each day, with ties broken alphabetically by institution id.
  • Stay length uses a Kaplan-Meier survival estimate, which counts stays that are still running correctly instead of ignoring them.
  • A rate change is a move of at least 0.05 percentage points that is still in place at the next observation, so a one-day scrape blip is not counted.
  • Where an institution has several savings products, only its best rate that day is used.

Limits

  • Our set covers 126 institutions. A bank we do not track could outrank everyone here.
  • Rates are scraped from public pages. A change at the bank may show up on our side a day or more later.
  • Promotional and balance-tiered rates are not separated out. Use each bank's own terms for what you would actually earn.
  • This is one rate environment (167 days). It does not predict what happens in a falling or rising cycle.
