!The Bottom Line

Grasshopper and Found both offer business checking with no required monthly fee on their base accounts. Grasshopper publishes tiered checking interest (dated 11/03/2025, so rates may have changed) and offers lending, with debit cash back only at a $10,000 average monthly balance; Found Free lists no APY, and its tax-estimate tools are the draw. Paid Found plans list yields, but those do not apply to Free. Pick based on whether you want interest and lending from one bank or built-in tax set-aside, and confirm live terms first.

Key Takeaways
  • Grasshopper's business checking and Found Free both have no required monthly fee. Grasshopper has a $100 minimum opening deposit.
  • Grasshopper publishes checking interest tiers up to 1.35% APY, dated 11/03/2025 by Grasshopper, so rates may have changed. Found Free lists no APY; the yields Found shows belong to its paid Plus and Pro plans.
  • Grasshopper's 1.00% debit cash back requires a $10,000 average balance within the calendar month, among other conditions. It is not unconditional.
  • Found is built around tax estimates and bookkeeping for self-employed owners. Grasshopper adds lending, including SBA 7(a) loans.

Quick answer

If you are a freelancer or sole proprietor who mostly wants tax money set aside automatically and does not carry a big balance, Found's free plan is built for that. If you carry a larger operating balance, want interest on checking, or expect to borrow, Grasshopper's published terms point that way. In the Grasshopper bank vs Found choice, it comes down to tax tooling versus interest and lending.

Source note: Grasshopper figures are per Grasshopper's own live pages, checked October 8, 2026, with the dates Grasshopper itself puts on its rates. Found figures are per Found's published pricing page as checked in September 2026, plus Found's FDIC help page as cited in our earlier coverage. Terms change, so confirm everything on each company's site before applying.

Watch Out: Found's paid plans list yields (Plus: 1.50% APY up to $20,000 at $35 a month; Pro: 2.50% APY at $80 a month, per Found's pricing page as checked in September 2026). Those do not apply to Found Free, and a paid-plan yield is not a fair comparison to Grasshopper's checking interest, which has no plan fee.

How Grasshopper's interest works

Per Grasshopper's startup banking page, accurate as of 11/03/2025, checking pays 1.00% APY on balances from $0.01 to $24,999.99, 1.35% from $25,000 to $250,000, and 1.00% above $250,000. Grasshopper notes that rates may change after the account is opened and fees may reduce earnings, so these figures may have changed. The 1.35% headline applies to the middle band only. Grasshopper's separate Innovator Savings page lists 3.00% APY from $25,000 up (1.55% below that), accurate as of 01/05/2026 and variable; that is a savings account, not checking.

Cash back has conditions

Grasshopper lists 1.00% cash back on qualified signature-based debit card purchases, but only if you maintain an average balance of $10,000 or more within the calendar month, the account is open, active and in good standing, and there were no NSF items in the preceding twelve months. Cash equivalents and returned purchases are excluded.

What each one is built around

Found's draw, covered in more detail in our Found vs. Lili comparison, is real-time estimated-tax calculation, automatic tax set-aside, and Schedule C preparation. Full in-app tax-return filing was reported discontinued in March 2026, so plan to file elsewhere.

Grasshopper's partner materials describe a fuller feature list, including ACH and wire handling, ATM network access, remote check deposit, a QuickBooks integration, and user permissions and approval workflows. Those details are not on the public startup banking page we checked on October 8, 2026, so confirm them with the bank. We found no tax-estimate feature in the details we have.

Who should pick Found instead

  • You are a freelancer or sole proprietor who wants taxes estimated and set aside automatically as money comes in.
  • Your balance is small enough that checking interest, and Grasshopper's $10,000 cash back threshold, are out of reach or a rounding error either way.
  • You do not need a term loan or SBA financing from the same bank.
  • You would rather not meet Grasshopper's eligibility rules. Grasshopper's partner materials limit eligibility to US-based businesses with US owners or owners with an ITIN, and US residents only. Check each company's own requirements on its site.

Who fits Grasshopper

  • You carry a meaningful operating balance, especially in the $25,000 to $250,000 band, and want interest on it at whatever rate Grasshopper currently pays.
  • You keep $10,000 or more on average and want the 1.00% debit cash back, which needs that balance.
  • You may borrow later: Grasshopper lists an Innovator term loan and SBA 7(a) lending, with SBA preapprovals starting at $150,000. See our Grasshopper SBA loans review.
  • You have a team and want user permissions and approval workflows, which Grasshopper's partner materials describe; confirm with the bank.
SwitchWize rule of thumb

Do not compare a headline yield to a free account without checking which plan it belongs to. A yield behind a monthly fee only helps once the interest earned beats the fee.
