Questions about a maturing CD

What happens when my CD matures?

The bank returns your deposit and interest, usually after a grace period of about a week or two to withdraw or switch. If you do nothing, most banks renew the CD for the same term at whatever rate they pay that day.

When should I start shopping for a new CD?

About two weeks before the maturity date. That leaves time to compare banks and open a new account so the money moves as soon as it is free. The calendar file sets a reminder for that day and for the maturity date.

Should I renew at my bank or move the money?

Ask your bank what rate it would renew at, then compare it with the best rate for the same term here. You can move the money at maturity without paying an early withdrawal penalty, so the only cost is the effort of opening a new account.

What if rates have fallen since I opened my CD?

A longer term locks in today's rate for longer, which helps if rates keep falling. A shorter term keeps your options open if you expect rates to rise. Both choices are a bet, so pick the term that fits when you will need the money.

How does this planner choose the bank for each term?

For each term it takes the highest rate from banks whose stated minimum deposit fits your amount. A bank that does not state a minimum can still be chosen, and the table flags it. Rates come from each bank's own page and are checked daily.
